About SVG
SVG is a new Internet standard, based on XML, for vector-based graphics. Vector graphics have many advantages over raster graphics (images), the most important being that they are scalable without distortion. This means that you can resize an SVG graphic to any size and the quality will not suffer. Vector graphics also tend to be smaller (and therefore faster to download and display) than raster images.
SVG was pioneered by Adobe, who have produced a plugin enabling browsers to display SVG files. It has now been ratified by the W3C as a standard, and so it is now a fixed and reliable format allowing websites to use in place of other image formats. The plugin is installed automatically with Acrobat Reader 5 and above, so many people already have SVG capabilities without knowing it.
