Object Features

The Stencil

Stencil

The most obvious, and useful, feature to do with objects is the stencil. From here are all your creations born; you drag the objects off the stencil and onto the work area to get them into the presentation. (Or you can double click an entry on the stencil, which puts that object or group down in its original position; great for copying objects between files.) Also extremely useful is the fact that you can drag items off the work area onto the stencil, which creates a new stencil containing all the currently selected objects. In the graphic, I have created four new stencils (after the Guideline stencil).

You can also see from this that stencils can have a variety of icons, to remind you what type of object they are, and also they can contain more than one object, so you can use a stencil as a page “template” with borders, line art and text all primed and in the right place.

Duplicate Object

Another great timesaver is the Duplicate Object command (on the Object menu, or use the grey + key), which makes a copy of the currently selected objects and offsets them by the height of the selection. This is particularly useful for creating a slide containing multiple bullets (a very common request), particularly as the bullet is a property of the object and so keeps its alignment for multi-line bullets. (Of course, you can use Windows Cut/Copy/Paste commands too.)

The Dropper Tool

Finally, a word on the Dropper tool. This useful little item lets you “pick up” the formatting on one object (right mouse button), and then apply it to other items in the presentation (left button), which is much quicker than rebuilding the object formatting parameters from scratch. This is particularly useful when you change your mind about the way the document should look; just change one of the objects, “suck up” its format and apply it to all the others.
